The Ati-Atihan Town of Kalibo is the Capital of the Province
of Aklan and socio-economic center of northern Panay Island. This urban center
is home to about 65,000 largely self-reliant and ingeniousKalibonhons – a people proud of their rich cultural heritage foremost
of which is the annual celebration of the world-famous Ati-Atihan Festival every
January.
The cradle of the
traditional handweaving of piña fibers – “the queen of Philippine
fabrics”, Kalibo boasts of various distinctions and attractions that include
the multi-awarded and leading national study tour destination – the Mangrove
Reforestation project cum Bakhawan Eco-Park and the century old Kalibo Cathedral that magnificently
stand adjacent to the Museo it Akean – one of the most beautiful museums in
the entire country.
Despite the unprecedented height of development experienced
in the past fifteen years,
Kalibo
has preserved its peaceful and closely-knit native atmosphere that represents
the stability of the region and showcases the multi-faceted attractions of the
Philippines.
